Accountability

United Way of Williams County is in compliance with the spirit and intent of the U.S. Patriot Act and other counter-terrorism laws. Affirmative action is taken to prevent financial, technical, in-kind or other resources from inadvertently being used for illegal acts and terrorist activities.

Financial Accountability

The United Way system has developed comprehensive requirements for completion of audited financial statements. They are intended to create a uniform set of standards for all United Ways to follow in preparing audited financial statements to ensure consistency and transparency on the part of each United Way. The requirements are based on current best practices in our industry as well as generally accepted accounting principles and requirements of the Financial Accounting Standards Board. United Way of Williams County is audited each year by Shultz Huber & Associates.

The Form 990, entitled “Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax,” is a report that must be filed each year with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by organizations exempt from Federal income taxes under section 501 of the Internal Revenue Code, and whose annual receipts are “normally” more than $25,000 a year. It is an information return and not an income tax return since the organizations that file it do not pay income taxes.

United Way Worldwide

The United Way of Williams County is an independent, local organization that works to better the lives of Williams County residents. Each year, we choose to renew our membership with United Way Worldwide, our trade organization. Our small investment (1% of campaign proceeds) in United Way Worldwide comes back to us in the form of training, usage of the United Way brandmarks, technical, and other services. At United Way Worldwide, success is measured by how well we deliver on our mission to make measurable improvements in communities nationwide. And we know the importance of setting high standards for ourselves and for our local partners. New membership standards were implemented for United Ways in 2003 and enhance the level of accountability and transparency in local operations. Annually, all United Ways must certify to United Way Worldwide their adherence to these requirements.

United Way of Williams County has met all United Way Worldwide membership requirements for 2023 and remains a member in good standing.
